Magliner

The Magline brand is so trusted and such a perennial feature of every industry that requires materials handling, that many hand trucks are often simply called “Magliners.”

The Equipment Every Farmer Should Have on Hand but Might Not Have Considered

It’s assumed that professional farmers are already equipped with a hoe, hose, hand cart, and whatever other tools they need to do their farming. As such, this article is more geared toward the hobbyist or urban farmer who may not have considered some of the equipment mentioned here that will hopefully make their lives easier. Still, if you’re a professional farmer, it’s worth giving this a look. You never know, some of the following tools could be just what you’ve been needing that you didn’t know to look for.

Baby Monitor

A baby monitor may not seem like a worthwhile agricultural tool—and if the farming you’re doing doesn’t involve the raising of any livestock, it may not be the most useful tool in your arsenal. However, a baby monitor with a microphone and camera (preferably including night vision) can prove a huge boon for monitoring livestock. It’s particularly useful when looking after young or sick livestock and fowl. Positioned just right it can not only monitor poultry and other animals but can also be used to track how much food and water remains.

Hand Trucks

For many newcomers to the world of agriculture, particularly hobbyist and urban farming, it can come as a (sometimes daunting) surprise how many heavy things have to be carried. Lumber for coops, hutches, and gardening beds; heavy bags full of compost, soil, fertilizer, mulch, wood shavings, feed, seed, and the like; as well as hoses, tools, and eventually, the fruits (sometimes literally) of the farming. For moving anything heavy, bulky, or awkward, a dependable hand truck is your best friend. If you’re going to be moving really heavy appliances or equipment, consider investing in a heavy duty hand truck.

Tool Belt and the Gardening Tools for It

If you’ve never done it, you should be aware that there is something oddly but incredibly satisfying about wearing a tool belt and pulling from it the equipment you need for a job. More importantly, it’s incredibly convenient. Tool belts are virtually always associated with manufacturing, construction, and similar occupations, but dismissing them as a fantastic farming and gardening accessory is an unfortunate oversight. A gardening tool belt elegantly and efficiently holds your gloves, trowel or hand spade, hand fork, hand hoe, weeder, and even seeds. And it’s a far better solution than having them laid out awkwardly on the ground to be lost in grass, covered in dirt, or obscured by picked weeds.

Digging Tools and Attachments

Obviously, any gardening is going to necessitate a good deal of digging. To the unfamiliar, the solution to the necessity to dig is ably provided by a shovel. Those with more experience, however, are aware that not all digging is the same. Not all soil is soft and cooperative. Not all digging takes place in conveniently open spaces. These are issues that can be sorted out with the right tools, however. If significant digging is going to be necessary, for starters, be sure you have a spade and shovel, preferably a long- and short-handled version of each. Then consider a pick for rougher ground, a spring-assisted shovel for more efficient digging, and any specialized digging tools, like a post hole digger, if necessary.
