The Magline brand is so trusted and such a perennial feature of every industry that requires materials handling, that many hand trucks are often simply called “Magliners.”

How Working in an Office Can Be Hard on Your Back and How to Remedy It

When people think of jobs that are rough on the back, it’s generally hard labor that comes to mind: furniture movers, construction workers, warehouse crew, etc. “Office worker,” however, probably isn’t high on the list of occupations that people consider risks to back health. But working in an office is, perhaps surprisingly, a path that puts individuals at risk for back pain and back injury.

The thing is, there is a feature of those labor-intensive jobs that actually reduces the risk of many kinds of injury: those who do labor are used to it. They’ve built up the strength for that work, they’ve almost certainly had a lot of training in avoiding back injuries, and they have the right equipment for doing labor. When they’re carrying a heavy load up or down staircases, they have access to and know how to use a stair climbing cart or dolly. That lack of familiarity with and equipment for labor is just one of the ways in which office workers can be more at risk of sustaining a back injury when they do need to move heavy or cumbersome items.

Keeping Fit

Sometimes old advice is still around for a reason. That’s definitely the case with admonitions to keep fit in general for back health. It’s becoming increasingly clear that virtually all health, physical health without a doubt, is a whole-body affair. Having an ergonomic office chair helps but won’t help all that much if a lack of core strength (or fitness otherwise) is resulting in perpetually bad posture in the chair. Look into exercises for the back and body that will keep all of you in top form.

Office Labor

Addressing the lack of familiarity and tools that can make office workers vulnerable to labor-based injuries requires some preparation, forethought, and keeping the optimal equipment around. An office environment can involve carrying heavy loads of paper; moving computers, printers, copy machines, and other office equipment; transporting multi-gallon jugs of water for water coolers; installing a microwave in the break room, etc.

Basically, that old advice applies again: Lift with your legs (not your back), plan out any lifting or moving of heavy things, always get help when necessary, and use the most appropriate equipment. Considering the variety of possible cargo, consider keeping a collapsible hand truck in the office that can be used vertically, horizontally, and often at an angle between the two for more versatile transport.

Ergonomics (In and Out of the Office)

Chances are that if you work in an office, you’re familiar with the importance of ergonomics. That includes utilizing a supportive and comfortable chair (and not slouching in it), appropriate keyboard placement, stretching throughout the day, and the like. It’s important to have your feet flat on the ground, the computer monitor at about eye-level, and to be sitting up straight to help avoid any bodily strain while working throughout the day at a desk.

However, just as staying fit is essential for back health, employing ergonomics in your car and home is important if the office-ergonomics are to be most beneficial. Study up on what ergonomic solutions you can implement outside of the office and consider your posture as you go about your day.
