How to Prepare Your Yard, Garden, and Property for Spring

For those of us who love gardening, there’s something particularly enchanting and exhilarating about the holiday season. Christmas cheer and New Year’s jubilation are great, but for the aspiring amateur botanists and landscapers as well as the gardeners among us, it means something at least as exciting: the winter solstice has passed and every day is a little bit longer than the last. And that means that—sooner than you think—you’ll be out there digging, planting, raking, pruning, and performing all of the other errands and exercises for coaxing the edible and ornamental… fruits of your labor.

However, those errands and exercises, while often satisfying, and certainly necessary, aren’t easy. And insufficient planning renders those tasks considerably less satisfying, less efficient, and a whole lot less fun. (And yes, there are people out there who find moving barrels full of soil to be used as planters with a convertible hand truck, and fixing bowing square-foot gardening beds to be a blast.)

That being said, it’s important to have the right tools not only for the job at hand, but for the person using the equipment as well. While home owners or consumers would benefit greatly from a convertible or traditional hand truck, for instance, something like an appliance hand truck would be better suited for commercial applications. As such, the following is a brief list of preparatory tasks and tools that can make spring preparation a whole lot easier and more productive for the everyday person among us.

Tools for Spring Preparation

Many or most gardening aficionados likely already have many of these tools. That said, if you do have them, give them a good once-over: Confirm that they are still functional and in good shape, have air in the tires when relevant, and the like. If you have a spreader, stock up onpre-emergent, seeds, fertilizer, pesticides, anti-slug pellets, herbicides, and whatever else you need. Of course, be sure that your traditional outdoor tools for the yard and garden are in good repair, and make sure you have some garbage and leaf bags, plus functional rakes of different varieties.

Consider getting things with blades, such as shovels, trowels, edgers, lawnmowers, etc., sharpened. You’d be amazed what a huge different a good edge brings. As mentioned earlier, having a good hand truck can be hugely helpful in any number of ways. Particularly when the proper hand truck is being used. A lightweight aluminum hand truck or dolly is great for bigger, bulkier, awkward, and heavier items. It can prove particularly useful when said hand truck or dolly is equipped with stair climbers, which can make a world of difference if you have to transport anything heavy or unwieldy up or down the stairs (such as bags of soil or other materials or supplies stored in the cellar).

That said, getting the right hand truck or dolly for the task at hand is only part of the equation, and it’s imperative to do your research to ensure that the brand you buy is known across the industry for creating sturdy, reliable equipment. Magline, for instance, has been in business for over 70 years, during which they’ve specialized in manufacturing and designing trustworthy, durable materials handling tools, from their stair climbing cart to their convertible hand truck, traditional hand trucks, and more.

Lawn and Garden Preparation and Care

Now that you’ve bought all of the amending or preventative pellets you’ll need for your spreader, apply them. But please note it’s best to not apply lawn seed to bare patches in the spring because the pre-emergent will prevent their germination. It’s actually best to seed your lawn in the fall. Or, if the patches are bad enough, purchase sod. Spring is actually one of the most important times for lawn care. Mow often in spring, more than once a week if possible, as letting grass grow too long too early can stunt its growth. You should also aerate the lawn, either by hiring someone to do it for you or by doing so yourself with a pitchfork or similar tool.

It’s also very important to carry out a deep, dethatching rake of the lawn. This clears up all of the matted grass and detritus and really opens the lawn up for the water, nutrients, light, and gasses it needs to thrive. Before the weeds are flourishing in either the lawn or garden is also the time to put down the weed barrier and heavy mulch in the places you’re not planting. Early spring is also the best time to plant flowers like lilies, poppies, gladiolus, and ranunculus.
